US landscape designer, Charles Jencks, is currently working on a woman with breast and hips up to 100 feet high, to be established some ten miles north of Newcastle. This new sculpture will be a kind of soulmate to the Angel of the North, erected by Antony Gormley in the early 1990s, just south of the city. It is hoped that the Jencks creation will enjoy the same popularity as the Angel, which will also be visible from the East Coast railway line and the A1 motorway. The financial motivation for the Goddess is that she will lie atop millions of tons of coal on the Blagdon estate and will become the centre of what has been called a 'land-art park' by the developers. Jencks claims inspiration from ancient Northumbrian mythology.
